Those odd stairs to no where. We took them out hung new joists on hangers and put down subfloor so when we got to flooring we could have one seemless open space. Fixing the stairs to no where:
Finally it was time to put the insert in since everything was leak free, dry and not rotten.
Still left on the list of things to do was finish installing trim, put up the fire place surround, run a gas line so we can install the drier and stove and order new countertops and install backsplash and a myriad of other little odds and ends to fully complete the house.

Regular fireplaces are like a giant hole in your house. They set a nice mood but they are super inefficient. We replaced ours with a new insert so that we could use that heat to help keep the house warm.
We took down the dry wall to find some rotten boards.
After removing the fire place we found that the chimney was leaking so we had to fix that and then replace the rotten boards after which we insulated and dry-walled this whole area.
Finally it was time to put the insert in since everything was leak free, dry and not rotten.
I retextured the part that needed to be painted because it will show outside our surround:
Hearth stones came in so we put them down for a fire barrier
Dad and Tom have started on the surround but more on that later!
We decided on carpet for 2 of the bedrooms (master and guest room):
I designed the master closet, and Dad and Tom installed it. It turned out great (and there is a shot of my $3 thrift store chandelier that I refinished)!
Guest room has a new ceiling fan as well and carpet and curtains.
Finally on to the new floor for the living/dining/kitchen and craft room. We went with laminate cause we got a fantastic deal on a Shaw 20 year laminate and it turned out gorgeous!
